- Upward social mobility has increasingly gotten difficult for a number of reasons. One is the vast financial gap between classes. Because of this, it is harder for younger people to get a higher education. Without the funds to get a higher education, they stay in their social class or lower. In these chapters, the sociologists state that as the years go by the children stay stagnant and do not precede the class of their parents. Since they do not get the same opportunities of the higher-class people, they cannot move up the social ladder.
Also, in this day and age it is not mainly of what you know but who you know. All this comes with opportunities that come with your parents’ social class. The middle and working class, do not make the capital that the upper classes do, and they cannot get governmental assistance as the lower class. That is another reason why they become stagnant and when they can go to school, they are in debt for the rest of their lives.
- I think that upward social mobility is much more difficult today because the standards have changed over time. Social structures such as lower class, middle class, and upper class are basically given to you when you are born and it’s up to you to either change it for the better, worse, or stay the same. Policies and laws could affect your potential for upward mobility, for example a drug dealer. Someone who regularly sells drugs could be making as much or even more money than someone in the upper class, but morally, they are not in the upper class because they are not making money legally.
- Upward social mobility is so much more difficult today than in the past decades because it is so much harder for people to move up the ladder. For example, someone reaching a higher level of education, or finding a job in their particular field. Individuals may not have the right resource or connection and nowadays it’s all about networking and getting connection. Individuals have to do double the work to get to where they want, having to balance their daily routine just to survive day and day out and hoping that will help them move up.
My social mobility would be affected if I decide to go for my master and I’m not able to pay for it, which would lead to me staying in the same position, but I do think my connection and resources will help me at this point, and I won’t give up until I get to where I want to be.
- Social mobility has become more difficult in recent years for a number of reasons. For example, with more women going into higher education and entering the workforce, there has been more limited spaces for men due to more companies wanting to achieve diversity in their employees. According to The Atlantic, “climbing up the ladder” has been harder due to bigger gaps in wages. Weaker unions have resulted in less wage disputes which has resulted in having the people who are on top secure even higher wages.
People who are in the middle are stuck in the middle due to “the number of jobs at the bottom and the top of the pay scale increasing, while the number of jobs in the middle isn’t. If there were more employment growth in the middle, those who start out at the bottom might have a better shot at moving up.”
- The reason upward mobility is more difficult in today’s society is because social class status is typically repeated. Children usually end falling into the same economic situations as their parents. Children tend to follow in parents’ footsteps if changes aren’t enforced. For example, if a child’s parents did not go to college and it is not something that is encourage to them, it is very likely the child won’t attend or make an effort to go.
There are people who do break free from their parents’ economic status, but there are more people who do not. The way social structure will affect my future is it will help me move forward. My parents did not go to college and they don’t have the highest paying job, but my parents did encourage and push me to go to college so I can live a better life than they did.
