Threat Analysis of Foreign Intelligence Entities Inter Service Intelligence Essay
The construction of a general threat analysis of the United States from the perspective of a foreign intelligence body or service will be the focus of the mid-term essay.
Threat Analysis by a Foreign Intelligence Entity (FIE)
The Counterintelligence Center Analysis Group (CIC/AG) of the CIA identifies, monitors, and analyzes FIEs’ attempts to harm US persons, activities, and interests. CIC/AG analysts concentrate on two types of counterintelligence threats to US
national security: 1. transnational threats, such as the counterintelligence aspect of terrorism or the threats posed to the US Government, intelligence operations, and information systems by emerging or changing technologies; and 2. threats
posed by FIEs and their activities.
This project, in line with undergraduate academic activities, allows students to assess their assimilation of course subjects as well as develop and evaluate their research and critical thinking skills. A combination of course materials and
external self-led research (depending on essay[s] selected) drives and tests the assignment, which is then examined and presented in essay(s) form.
This assignment consists of a six to eight-page double-spaced research analysis paper (this page count does not include a title page, abstract (optional), table of contents (optional), Reference/Bibliography page(s), or Endnotes page(s) (if
needed)). The source material should mostly come from self-directed external scholarly article research. The content of the paper should be six to eight pages long, and it should be the written outcomes of your research.
Topic: Create a general threat analysis of a foreign intelligence entity (FIE) targeting the United States of America. Russia’s SVR, Iran’s MOIS, Al Qaeda (or any of its’subsidiaries,’ North Korea’s Reconnaissance Bureau, or Venezuela’s Bolivarian
National Intelligence Service, for example, are all examples.
A foreign intelligence entity (FIE) is any known or suspected foreign organization, person, or group (public, private, or governmental) that conducts intelligence activities in the United States in order to obtain U.S. information, block or impair
U.S. intelligence collection, influence U.S. policy, or disrupt U.S. systems and programs. A foreign intelligence and security service [FISS] as well as international terrorist organizations are included in this category. (DoDD 5240.06, CIAR, 17 May 2011; JP 1-02; JP 2-01.2, CI & HUMINT in Joint Operations, 16 Mar 2011; and JP 2-01.2, CI & HUMINT in Joint Operations, 16 Mar 2011)
A thorough description of the FIE (strength, location, organizational structures (if known), whether they operate under official cover or under unofficial coverinside corporations, etc.) should be included in your FIE threat analysis. Describe the
mission of the FIE, as well as certain known and suspected US targets. [Do not choose the People’s Republic of China (PRC – Mainland or Communist China) as your FIE because the Final Essay will be about the PRC; a paper about the PRC would be rejected.]
To evaluate the FIE’s threat against the following types of US targets, your FIE threat analysis should use the three general threat categories: low, medium, and high.
Personnel, installations, and facilities, to name a few.
2) Information technology, defense, and communications
3) sensitive military and intelligence operations, such as intelligence gathering, R&D, covert action, identifying US intelligence personnel, and so on.
Research open sources for each of these three areas and offer precise specifics of your research to support your FIE threat assessment. To support your analyses and conclusions, include dates, activities, persons, and locations.
A title page, citations, and a bibliography are all required for your paper. Your paper should be formatted in the Chicago style.
