Strengths and Weaknesses Of Leadership Styles
TASK 1
Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your leadership style (“directing”)
Strengths: The most significant strength of the directing leadership style is providing one source of direction on getting projects completed. Clear and concise expectations are provided to all team members so there is no confusion on what needs to be done, how to do it most efficiently and in the shortest amount of time. Feedback can be given on a case by case basis depending on the employee needs. Some require constant feedback and direction where others can be given the end result needed and will get there with minimal direction. Having one origin of direction minimizes confusion and keeps everyone focused on what needs to be done. This ensures projects get done correctly and on time.
Weaknesses: My directing leadership style’s weaknesses are exposed when employees already know what is expected, why it is expected, and when it is expected. This can cause my leadership style to come off as dominating and unappreciated. A secondary weakness can be exposed if employees tell me that they understand all that is needed on a project, but in reality do not know how to do it correctly. If I do not identify that early, it can cause wasted work and delay. Another weakness with the directing leadership style is it provides less opportunity to build people for a succession plan. If directing drifts towards the dominating side then it can hinder employee development.
