First to provide a brief definition of qualitative and quantitative research. The qualitative design comes from one-on-one interviews that are difficult to condense into a numerical format (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). The quantitative design focuses on numerical information that is easy to understand and communicate (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). When evaluating information from these two designs it’s important to make sure that it matches the research question being evaluated. One thing I have learned from all classes before is to make sure the information is reliable and valid. Yet for each one they each require specific characteristics when acquiring the information. Qualitative must be structured if not it loses its validity and reliability as information may become confused with others. Too small, a sample will not provide any real information so a larger sample must be taken in this design to have a wide range of statistical data. Qualitative focus on a smaller sample but with multiple points of view for a wider understanding of a research question. Rigor establishes confidence in the findings of the research being conducted (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). Since qualitative design is harder to translate over it’s important to make it structured and that everyone is asked the same questions. This provides a baseline and makes differences more obvious between the participants. The two designs differ in the detail in the information provided. Qualitative is heavily detailed as it is a person’s account making it more personal. The detail also allows for a deeper understanding when correlating research. Quantitative is more straight to the point information that allows translation only in numbers and provides a bigger scale to information. An example of rigor in qualitative design is to include templates, and standards in the research (Harley & Cornelissen, 2020). The quantitative design aims to find the relationship between the dependent and independent variables its much more about quantifying and finding ‘how many’ in a data presented in a research question. Quantitative is experimental or descriptive, while qualitative design focuses on the qualities and characteristics of data. It means identifying themes and explanations about the data (Queirós et al., 2017).
The characteristics to evaluate in qualitative design include applicable work setting, the researchers, research method, complex reasoning, and flexibility. While in quantitative design, aspects to think of are, the measurable valuable, use of a standardized instrument of research, average population distributing assumption, method of presenting the data, and use of a reputable method (Queirós et al., 2017).
The characteristics are essential in both qualitative and quantitative design since they help the researcher get the accurate outcome and decide on the best method to use of the two techniques. For example, quantitative will be the best design when researchers need a data-driven and precise result. Still, when an analysis is based on understanding reason, opinion, question, or motivation, the data will be more thematic and less statistical (Queirós et al., 2017).
