I’d like to include that Plato mentioned that part of the Noble Lie was the concept that although all of the members of society were of varying qualities of metal, because they were all still metals born of the same Earth they were all siblings. This aspect of the Noble Lie was important because it would be difficult to maintain order without it; simply being told that you are bronze or iron can make acceptance of the fact difficult and subsequently makes people of higher quality metal easy targets to vent out one’s frustrations with their lot, but when told that the people of higher status are essentially family it becomes much easier to accept both one’s own position and the people in power because you feel like you’re supporting them rather than being exploited or used.

Personally speaking, I think Confucius’s philosophy is more radical because this philosophy directly challenges some other beliefs in Confucius’s time, and he supports ideas that people at the time did not widely accept. As legalist Han Feizi criticized, although Confucius claimed that his theories originated from the ancestors, other beliefs appealed to the same ancestral worship but supported different ideals (Hoston 47). Since there existed debates on the essence of the claimed reactionary political ideas, it is safe to say that there was no consensus on who the reactionaries were. Although some may quickly assume the conservative nature of Confucianism, it must not be overlooked that there existed other mainstream and non-Confucian political practices. Since rulers and the subjects might have been more used to some different philosophies, it is possible that people would feel more radical about Confucius’s belief when Confucianism challenged their political understandings, which means they were unlikely to think of it as the philosophy of recovering traditions.
