Low self-esteem issues in adolescent.
Low self-esteem is considered a developmental issue, which affects
emotional and social development among the affected persons.
Adolescents who experience low self-esteem may often think or speak
negatively about themselves and this affects how they interact with their
peers, parents, and teachers. Self-esteem is linked to other development
issues such as identity formation and self-concept and as such, the
problem of low self-esteem may come from different sources at different
development stages in a child’s or an adolescent’s life (NoAuthorFound,
2013). Whereas many adolescents may try to overcome low self-esteem
from a personal level, the issue can be addressed if the parties involved in
the adolescent’s life contribute positively to finding the solution. Among
the negative effects of low self-esteem include withdrawal, depression,
declining academic performance, and violence.
The first aim of this topic is to investigate the importance of self-esteem
development during early and late adolescent years and the relation it has
on identity formation and self-concept. Secondly, it will outline some of the
important researches, theories, and components of self-concept, identity
formation, and self-esteem (Dusek, et al. 1986). This will include the
masculinity/femininity component of self-esteem to understand how low
self-esteem affects the two genders separately. Thirdly, the topic will
discuss various remedies to address low self-esteem among adolescents.
According to Alsaker, and Kroger (2006), it is imperative that parents and
teachers get to understand the significant issues surrounding self-esteem
since they play an important role in nurturing the lives of an adolescent.
The roles they play in the adolescents’ lives can either negatively or
positively contribute to the overall development of the youth’s self-esteem.
