The general subject of your paper will be the era of Reconstruction. Your assignment is to find two scholarly papers of between 15 and 25 pages apiece which examine some aspect of Reconstruction from different perspectives. You can take the model of the essays at the end of each chapter in the Major Problems text as an example of
the kind of opposing essays I would like you to look for. The two essays do not need to be entirely in opposition to each other, nor do they have to be on exactly the same specific subject. However, they should treat the same general subject from different perspectives.
For example, if you were to choose the Black Codes, the set of racist laws passed throughout the South to put freed blacks back into a state of de facto slavery (or worse), you should find two essays which have as their main subject the Black Codes. One paper may examine the Black Codes from the perspective of how they were applied
in a particular state or city while another may examine how many states passed some form of Black Code and which states were the worst. On the other hand, one paper may look at how Radical Republican politicians in the North looked at the Black Codes, while another may look at how blacks resisted the Codes.
