Interpersonal Communication Assignment for HHS 207
With great power comes tremendous responsibility, as the saying goes. When it comes to connecting with people, human services workers must exercise extreme caution, especially when it comes to being aware of the power dynamic that exists between the worker and the client. In this final discussion forum, you’ll use the course content and the National Organization for Human Services’ ethical standards to identify positive and negative aspects of authority you have in a fictional or real-life human services scenario.
Answer the six statements related to your interpersonal power (p. 311-312) from Chapter 12 of The Interpersonal Communication Book; read the National Organization for Human Services Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals (Links to an external site.) and think about power and influence in human services. Then go over your answers to the six items and think about how much interpersonal influence you think you have.
Initial Post: Please write a minimum 300-word post that adequately addresses each of the items listed below. Remember to use APA style to cite all of your sources of information, including the textbook.
In terms of how you exert power, what would you consider some of your personal communication strengths?
What are some of your own communication development areas in terms of how you exert power?
How would (or do) you use your knowledge of your strengths and limitations, in addition to the ethical standards for human service professionals, to reduce the presence of negative power and influence among the client population of your choice (e.g., children and families, the mentally ill, the homeless, etc.) if you were to imagine (or if you are currently) a human services professional working with a client population of your choice (e.g., children and families, the mentally ill, the homeless, etc.)
Day 3 (Thursday) of the learning week is the deadline for the initial response, and Day 7 (Monday) is the deadline for at least two significant responses of at least 100 words to two separate peers.
Consider how you’d like to interact with your peers as a guided response. For instance, how do you exhibit authority and influence in similar or different ways? Would you respond in the same way to negative shows of power and influence? Why do you think that is? Please be nice and follow the norms of respectful interaction when responding.
