In SQL, there are three main types of relationships that can be implemented between tables in a relational database: one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many.
One-to-One Relationships:
A one-to-one relationship exists between two tables when each record in the first table can be associated with only one record in the second table, and vice versa. This type of relationship is not commonly used in database design, but it can be useful for situations where data needs to be separated into two tables for organizational or security purposes.
To implement a one-to-one relationship, a foreign key is added to one of the tables that references the primary key of the other table. For example, if we have a table called “employees” and a table called “contact_info”, we might add a foreign key to the “employees” table that references the primary key of the “contact_info” table.
One-to-Many Relationships:
A one-to-many relationship exists between two tables when each record in the first table can be associated with one or more records in the second table, but each record in the second table can be associated with only one record in the first table. This is the most common type of relationship used in database design.
To implement a one-to-many relationship, a foreign key is added to the “many” side of the relationship (the second table) that references the primary key of the “one” side (the first table). For example, if we have a table called “customers” and a table called “orders”, we would add a foreign key to the “orders” table that references the primary key of the “customers” table. This allows us to associate each order with a specific customer.
Many-to-Many Relationships:
A many-to-many relationship exists between two tables when each record in the first table can be associated with one or more records in the second table, and vice versa. This type of relationship requires a third table, known as a junction table or bridge table, to be created to store the relationships between the two tables.
To implement a many-to-many relationship, we would create a new table that contains foreign keys that reference the primary keys of the two tables we want to associate. For example, if we have a table called “students” and a table called “courses”, we would create a new table called “student_courses” that contains foreign keys that reference the primary keys of both the “students” and “courses” tables. This allows us to associate multiple courses with multiple students.
