Violence, danger, and fear in relation to sexuality have been reoccurring themes in readings and films this the semester.
Discuss how violence and safety may affect sexuality and gender in following three types of spaces: the street, ‘home’, and ‘institutional’ spaces.
While we have primarily focused on thinking about sex and gender in urban contexts during this course, we have also examined suburbs, rural spaces, and cyber space.
Discuss the different affordances these spaces have for sexuality and gender.
Discuss the films How to Survive a Plague and Tangerine in terms of ‘optics’ and ‘respectability’. Be specific about the particular issues and contexts. Make sure you discuss them in relation to the urban spaces depicted in the films/histories.
What does the term ‘moral geography’ mean? Discuss the moral geography of sex in contemporary American society. Write about this in relation to social reproduction, leisure time, consumption of sex, and family planning.
At different points during the semester we have read about and discussed the impact of sound and light.
Use two examples from our course materials to discuss and explain how sound/silence and light/darkness affect performances of gender and expressions of sexuality.
