How to Look at Art Assignment
Discussion Board 3
Instructions
Based on your reading in Chapters 16-17 in Living with Art, respond to TWO of the three following questions: Your responses should be from 175-300 words per question.
In prepartion for this Discussion Board, be sure to review the Power Points, “How to Write a Comparison” and “How to Look at Art” (in the Interactives, Unit 2). These mini-lectures will help you in responding to any of these questions, which are asking you to make specific comparisions. How to Look at Art Assignment
In responding to the questions for each discussion board, you are encouraged cite specific examples from the course text (or other sources) to illustrate and support your points—these supporting examples should be different from those that the author of the course text uses when discussing similar themes or issues. Try looking in other chapters of the course text, even those that are not assigned; you will find a wealth of images throughout the book. It should be part of your learning experience in this course to simply LOOK at as much art as you can and to see not only what the experts see, but also to experience a work of art for yourself and to “discover” what is there in your own way.
Also, remember that if you copy or paraphrase word or ideas from the text or other sources, make sure that you follow appropriate procedures for crediting those sources. Put any quoted text in quotation marks “” and follow it with the source in parenthesis (). Citing incorrectly will reduce your grade and may be considered plagiarism. You must cite your sources in MLA format at the end of each response. Review announcements on how to cite correctly.
Finally, please note that responses that merely report back information from the text or that do little more than repeat other students’ posts will not receive high marks. Originality and critical thought are the goals here.
Question 1:
1) This question has four sections. First briefly explain what primarily distinguishes Renaissance art in general from the prior Medieval period. Then, trace the evolution and development of art through the periods of the Early Renaissance to the High Renaissance. Compare and contrast the work of an Italian Renaissance artist with a work done by a northern European Renaissance artist. Include a discussion of the different concerns and heritages of the Italian and Northern Renaissance artists and how these resulted in different characteristics in the art work of each region. Be sure to use the new art vocabulary you are learning as you describe the art works. Use specific examples of art in your response.
Question 2:
- Compare and contrast two sculptures which portray the human figure. One must be from either the Renaissance or Baroque period. Select the other sculpture of the human figure from any of the earlier cultures that we have studied so far, from Prehistoric to the Medieval periods. What role did the human figure play in the art work and culture of each era? Include how these aspects are supported by specific formal or thematic aspects of each work. Be sure to use the terminology regarding elements of art and principles of design that we studied in Unit I as you proceed in your discussion. Use specific examples of art in your response.
Question 3:
- Compare and contrast two works of art done in two different eras/styles. Select from the following pairs of eras/styles: Medieval and Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo, Rococo and Neoclassical
Include an overview of what primarily distinguishes the art work of each era, and then indicate specific formal or thematic aspects of each work that typify its era. Include a discussion of the role of changing cultural and political climates in influencing the shift from on style to the next. You may choose two paintings, two sculptural works, or two architectural works. Be sure to use the terminology regarding elements of art and principles of design that we studied in Unit I as you proceed in your discussion. Select specific art works and provide page numbers or links.
(For each of the questions above, remember to include page and illustration number, if from the text book or appropriate citation, if taken from an outside source).
