This interview paper is about the subject “Is Islam A Peaceful Religion?” According to my opinion there are lots of things are unfamiliar to the world about the religion of Islam. Because of this throughout the world it is commonly asserted that Islam is a religion of violence, misogyny, and a host of other negative attributes. However, to know what the exact truth is, I’ve interviewed a well-known Indian Muslim scholar, Dr. Zakir Naik via Skype. In that interview he thoroughly answered to my all questions about peace in the religion of Islam.
In the beginning of interview, I asked him to define what peace is for the Islam. Giving the definition of peace for the religion of Islam, Dr. Zakir Naik said, “Islam as a religion is simple and balanced. In the Islam all the area of human life is pre-defined. It is called as a peaceful religion because it gives clarity in reward and punishment in the act of the people.”
In the next question that how can Islam be called the religion of peace when it was spread by the sword, Dr. Zakir Naik described that it is misconception that Islam was spread by the sword. He said, “Islam would not have millions of adherents all over the world, if it had not been spread by the use of force. Islam means peace, and as religion of peace sometimes force has to be used to maintain peace. It is precisely for this reason that we have the police who use force against criminals and antisocial elements to maintain peace in the country. Islam promotes peace. At the same time, Islam exhorts it followers to fight where there is oppression. The fight against oppression may, at times, require the use of force. In Islam force can only be used to promote peace and justice.”
Answering the question regarding how much acceptance of other religions and people with different faith have found in Islam, he says, “acceptance of other religions and people with different faith have found in Islam because in the Qur’an it is clear that there must be “no compulsion in religion.” Yet Muslims are not pluralistic in their worldview – they consider their religion to the true religion and invite people of all races, nationalities and religions to be part of it. In fact, the Qur’an explains that the religion of the Jews and Christians is the same as that revealed to Muhammad, and Allah is God of them all. Moreover he quoted Quranic verse 6:154-56 and said, “The Book was sent down to two People before us, and for our part, we remained unacquainted with all that they learned by assiduous study.”
Explaining the misconception about Islam and terrorism, Dr. Zakir Naik says, “the word terrorism came into wide usage only a few decades ago and unfortunate it’s highly have related to the Muslims. Islam is strongly forbid the killing of innocent people and spreading terrorism. Islam itself meaning of peace and this is only a religion which says, “Killing one innocent man is the killing of all humanity.””
Regarding answer of suicide attack question to kill the people, Dr. Zakir Naik answers, “Islam considers all life forms as sacred. However, the sanctity of human life is accorded a special place. The first and the foremost basic right of a human being is the right to live.” The Glorious Quran says; “take not life, which God hath made sacred, except by way of justice and law: thus doth He command you, that ye may learn wisdom.” The Quran prohibits homicide in clear terms. The taking of a criminal’s life by the state in order to administer justice is required to uphold the rule of law, and the peace and security of the society. Only a proper and competent court can decide whether an individual has forfeited his right to life by disregarding the right to life and peace of other human beings.
Dr. Zakir Naik also explains the term of jihad and its logic related with peace. He says, “Jihad means strive. It is an effort to practice religion in the face of oppression and persecution. The effort may come in fighting the evil in your own heart, or in standing up to a dictator. The role of Jihad to make peace in a society is to give permission of fighting in self-defense, in defense of religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat, which include prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops, trees and livestock.”
Regarding human rights question in Islam for making the peace in a society, Dr. Zakir Naik told me that he responded, “the attitude of Islam about human rights to make a peaceful society is to teach people how to think, live and promote peace. Islam has supported values and structures which are incompatible with the assumptions which cause the collective declaration of Human Rights. Muslim women are subjugated because; according to Qur’an, “Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other, and because men spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because God has guarded them. As for those among you who fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them.”
Answering question about what does Islam say to convert one from other religion into this religion forcefully, Dr. Zakir Naik says, “Islam is totally against the forceful conversion. Muslims are commanded to fight unbelievers until they say they believe in Allah (or pay the Jizya), but there seems to be an underlying understanding that belief itself can’t be forced. Nevertheless, once a subjugated individual outwardly converts to Islam under the strain of taxes and discrimination, they are not allowed to recant upon penalty of death. Their children must also be raised Muslim.”
In response of the question that when all the Muslim follow one and the same Qur’an then why is there so many sects and different schools of thoughts among Muslims, Dr. Zakir Naik describes, “The tragedy is that such divisions are not endorsed by Islam at all. Islam believes in development unity amongst its followers. The Glorious Qur’an says: “And hold fast, All together, by the rope Which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves.” {Al-Qur’an 3:103} Allah (SWT) says that one should disassociate oneself from those who divide their religion and break it up into sects. The Glorious Qur’an says: “As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast no part in them in the least: Their affair is with Allah: He will in the end Tell them the truth Of all that they did.”
In the last question that all religions basically teach followers to do good deeds, so why should a person only follow Islam than other religion, Dr. Zakir Naik defens as, “All religions basically exhort mankind to be righteous and eschew evil. But Islam goes beyond that. It guides us towards practical ways of achieving righteousness and eliminating evil from our individual and collective lives. Islam takes into account human nature and the complexities of human society. Islam is guidance from the Creator Himself. Therefore, Islam is also called the natural religion of Man.”
