Dear Professor and classmates,
The theoretical orientation that I mainly identify most with as a future therapist is not focused solely on just one specific therapeutic approach. In my opinion, the three of the most influential schools in contemporary individual counseling and psychotherapy are probably the psychodynamic school, the humanistic school, and the cognitive-behavioral school.
Psychotherapy theories provide an interpretive framework for therapists and counselors to understand their client’s behaviors, thoughts, and feelings and guide them as they navigate the client’s journey from diagnosis to the end of treatment (Mearns, 2007). To assist people in their therapeutic journey, theoretical approaches play an important part in the therapeutic process. Every case will be different in a variety of ways, therefore, being able to learn the client’s story or their own narrative can help the therapist.
As I envision myself as a therapist, I believe that I will lean more into the narrative therapy approach. In narrative therapy, the goal is to determine how a key problem, viewed within an existing life story, affects or impacts the client’s life. Thus, the therapist begins by asking open-ended questions, allowing the client to choose how they wish to tell their story.
There are several factors that influence an individual’s approach to their training and coaching. The behavior of a client will be viewed as a function of their reward and punishment systems by a therapist trained in behaviorism. In behavioral counseling, counselors primarily focus on the impact environmental factors have on an individual’s behavior, rather than whether it may be due to thoughts or unconscious motivations. An important factor in the outcome of therapy is the relationship between the therapist and client, regardless of whether you are seeking treatment for an addiction like alcohol or a mental health condition like depression (Miciak, 2018). Moreover, thetherapeutic relationship can be described as the attitudes and feelings that the client and therapist have toward each other. By asking open-ended questions, the therapist allows the client to tell their story in whatever way they choose (Miciak, M, 2018).

The answer is complete. 50 points: The essay illustrates exemplary understanding of the relevant material by thoroughly and correctly addressing the relevant content; identifying and explaining all of the key concepts/ideas; using correct terminology explaining the reasoning behind key points/claims and substantiating, as necessary/useful, points with several accurate and illuminating examples. No aspects of the required answer are missing. Use of Sources (worth a maximum of 20% of the total points). Zero points: Student failed to include citations and/or references. Or the student failed to submit a final paper. 5 out 20 points: Sources are seldom cited to support statements and/or format of citations are not recognizable as APA 6th Edition format.
