Eric Garner, 43, was killed by a white police officer after he was put in an illegal chokehold for 15 seconds- allegedly for selling loose cigarettes. Garner said I can’t breathe 11 times as he was held down by several offices on a sidewalk. Garners’ death sparked peaceful protest across the nation, with the demonstrators adopting the phrase, “I Can’t Breathe” as a symbol and slogan of protest.
John Crawford, 22, was shot and killed by a white police officer at a Walmart in Beavercreek, Ohio. There was no confrontation with the police, and Crawford was unarmed- he had been holding a toy BB gun in the store.
Michael Brown.18 was shot and killed by Ferguson police office Darren Wilson. A grand jury declined to charge Wilson in the fatal shooting. This sparked national/ international attention with protestors adopting the slogan and symbol of “Hands Up.”
Ezell Ford, 25, of Los Angeles who suffered of mental illness, was shot three times including once in the back, by a white police officer.
Tamir Rice, 12, was fatally shot by Cleveland police after the officers mistook his toy gun for a real weapon.
Walter Scott, 50, was shot by police for running away from a traffic stop for a broken taillight.
Freddy Gray,25, died of a spinal cord injury a week after he was arrested by Baltimore police. The spinal cord injury occurred while Gray was in police custody. Gray’s death sparked national outrage.

Cox High School Principal, Mary Middle-Classy, is Afro Caribbean and a retired Prison Warden. A staunch conservative, Mrs. Middle-Classy recently announced her plans to run for mayor of Imperial Heights. Mrs. Middle-Classy’s campaign announcement listed police chiefs and Prison Wardens from every nearby Municipality. When asked by “Word” news her views on the police controversy, Mrs. Middle Classy responded:
“Let me be clear, every police force has one or even two bad apples. Understand the fact that police are on the front line. As far as I am concerned, there is too much crime and so much trouble in the world. If men of color are not committing crimes, they will never get stopped by the police. If they do get stopped, they need to do what the police say to do and never resist. This is how they can avoid violent encounters- Straight UP.
