- Think about what you have learned about the Presidency this week. Do you think Trump’s response to Covid-19 is similar to what other American presidents would have done in a similar situation? Why or why not? What presidential powers could have been used differently?
Every president has different ways of dealing with different situations. If every president thought the same we wouldn’t have the need for an election of even political parties. However, Trumps response to Covid-19 was far from what should’ve been done because instead of getting educated on the situation, letting experts do their job and inform the world about the deadly virus spreading, Trump decided to say, “They — in most — most cases, in almost — I mean, literally, in most cases, they automatically cure. They automatically get better.” regarding people who test positive for Covid-19 which is far from true. I believe most presidents would trust what, in this case, epidemiologists and other experts of viruses have to say about this fast spreading disease, learn about it, like actually educate themselves on something that most likely will affect the country’s people, and set an example to everyone.
Trump could’ve used Neustadt’s argument for the president’s core power which is to persuade others or make them believe that what the president wants of them is in his/her interest as well. Wearing a mask when told it would be the most effective way to stop the spread of the virus should’ve been an easy task for the president to do. Not only would it have made him seem educated on the topic, it would’ve also persuaded many citizens to do the same simply because he’s the president, and also show that he actually has an interest in his people’s health. Instead, he says “It’s going to disappear. One day, it’s like a miracle — it will disappear”, which has caused the death of nearly 250,000 American people.
