Academic writing is a process with more steps than simply “writing the paper.” College-level papers that demonstrate critical thinking and engagement with course materials need to be carefully planned and thought out before any actual prose are written.
This assignment is meant to help you practice these planning steps before you submit the full paper. Because of the importance of the planning stages of the paper, fully written papers at this stage will not be accepted.
While there are certain minimum requirements a detailed outline will need to fulfill, you are encouraged to try different outline formats to find what works best for you.
Your outline must include, but is not limited to, the following:
- · A draft of your full introductory paragraph, including thesis statement
- · Topic sentences (or one-sentence summaries) of each paragraph (the total number of paragraphs will vary, but for a paper this length there should be at least 7), with bullet point enumerations of support for that summary that include, over the course of the outline:o At least 2 in-text citations with full footnote citation and bibliographic entries.Your outline should show a clear flow of ideas and general sense of cohesion that is based on your thesis. You are not required to use complete sentences in the bullet point enumerations. (Most outlines use bullet points, but if you would like to try a different format, please check in with your TA.)The outline should be no more than 2-3 pages.
Paper Overview (Same info as on the initial prompt)
Thoughout this quarter, we have explored how the cultural conditions, primarily in Europe and the United States, have been reflected by music in (or tied to) the Western classical tradition. For our final project, you will write a 6-8 page paper that examines a musical case study as it relates to one of the broad topics we have covered (or will shortly cover) in this course. These topics include – but are not necessarily limited to: Music and “invented” traditions Amateur vs. professional musical practices Nationalism and music Music and patronage (either private or public) How technology affects musical practices Musical modernism Music and racism “High” vs. “pop” art Choose a musical case study (i.e. a specific musical community, genre, artist, festival, etc.) and construct a paper that examines your chosen musical case study from the vantage point of one of the larger topics we covered in class (see above). There is a substantial amount of freedom in this project, with few limitations. A good paper will make a cogent, well-supported argument about your musical case study. This case study should not have been specifically covered in class. You will need to use at least three sources from outside the readings assigned for class; at least two of these sources must be from journals or other academic sources. You are also free to use any number of assigned readings, as well as other non-academic sources.
