Genetically modified crops (GMC) result through the manipulation of original crops’ genetic material through genetic engineering (GE). Through the alteration of specific gene sequences in an organism’s DNA, by gene splicing, a new organism results. Recombinant DNA techniques facilitate the predictable, precise, and rapid transfer of
desirable traits between different organisms (Burdock, 2003). While there are several advantages associated with the genetic engineering of crops, the risks associated with the utilization of GMC products far outweigh these benefits. Genetic engineering aims at creating plants with desirable traits, including hastened maturity, drought
resistance, pest resistance, disease resistance, and upgraded nutritional qualities; however, the safety of such products is questionable. GMCs have health effects, can lead to resistance in pests and weeds, transformation in non-GMC crops, and may lead to allergic reactions. For these reasons, people should not consume GMC products.
Although GE has several advantages in crop production, the intervention is associated with several safety issues. First, most GE crops are resistant to the direct effects of glyphosate when Roundup is applied to control pests. According to the World Health Organization, this inert ingredient is a probable human carcinogen (Hiar, 2018).
This ingredient is considered harmful not only to an ecosystem’s biodiversity but also to human health. Since GE crop utilization has increased in the recent past, the herbicide application has skyrocketed. As a result, the effects of glyphosate and other inert components of Roundup can be unprecedented. Scientists have discovered that
Roundup’s inactive components escalate the toxic effect of glyphosate on human cells (Hiar, 2018). Another Roundup inert ingredient, polyethoxylated tallow amine, is suspected to be deadly in human placental, umbilical cord, and embryonic cells. Recent research has also associated Roundup with pregnancy problems through hormone
production interference which might lead to miscarriages, abnormal fetal development, or low birth weights (J. van Rijssen & Morris, 2018). This concern is a matter of life or death.
