please respond to the following discussion post as a peer making a comment on the post. Two implications of the current health care reform on my organization’s goals and strategic plan include 1) COVID-19 implications and 2) Staffing shortages.
First off, the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected my health care organization’s finances. The American Hospital Association estimates a financial impact of $202.6 billion in lost revenue for America’s hospitals and health care systems, or an average of $50.7 billion per month (Gee, 2021). These processes and operations will need to be adjusted to reflect the number of uninsured Americans who lost
their jobs and health insurance due to the pandemic, as well as the number of finances lost in health care organizations. Due to the increases in Medicaid, CHIP, and marketplace coverage, the health care reform must be adjusted to offer mechanisms to effectively restore coverage lost during the COVID-19 pandemic and expand health coverage and affordability (Cutler, 2021).
Secondly, because the Medicaid expansion in health care reform has proven to increase affordability in health care services, our organization is facing staffing shortages that consist of too many clients per health care worker. The labor shortage in health care is not going away any time soon. An aging population increases the demand for physicians while also contributing to the deficit, as more doctors near
retirement age. COVID-19 also plays a significant role in the coming years as well. Processes and operations will need to implement new policies that specifically address the health care industry’s labor shortages. For example, new technology such as Virtual Intake Management can improve the experience for patients and staff by offering digital scheduling, digital documents, payment facilitator, patient self-
check-in, and a digital referral facilitator. As a result, this type of program saves current health care organizations time and money (Hoffman, 2021). Specific strategies to better performance and to manage labor shortages should be reflected in new health care reforms.
