Selected Question: Identify and evaluate the factors of adverse effects after getting cosmetic fillers and to propose some solutions.
Research Question: What are the leading factors that cause consumers to get fillers, and the possible adverse effects when getting cosmetic fillers?
Specific Purpose: Determine the impact of social media in a consumer’s choice to get fillers which may lead to adverse effects after receiving treatment.
Thesis: Consumers who use social media more often compared to those who do not consume social media are more susceptible to getting cosmetic treatments, therefore are at an increased risk to having adverse effects after their procedure.
- Overview of the issue you are examining
This issue I am examining is the dangers of cosmetic fillers in the face when it is done by providers who may be unlicensed, or when the fillers are counterfeit.
- Overview of what your paper will cover and how this will be accomplished
This scholarly paper will cover my exigence of adverse effects after getting cosmetic fillers from unlicensed providers and/or counterfeit products. I will do this by speaking about how social media influences an individual’s perception of beauty, and will speak on some solutions to how to choose a good provider if deciding to pursue cosmetic treatments.
- Statement of Significance (why your position is important)
This position is important because as the demand for cosmetic fillers grow, there will also be an increase in the possibility of having more cases of adverse effects of cosmetic fillers. Nurses must recognize that social media plays an importance in the standards of beauty, which influences young people to pursue cosmetic treatments. Many people may try to choose the most economical options when paying for these treatments, however some of these options are not the safest. Choosing cheaper alternatives could compensate for quality of the filler product and risk the chance of having an unlicensed provider inject the substance for a much cheaper rate.
- Overview of Related Literature
Goldie et Al. (2021) ’s work are important as it showed that an individual can develop a cosmetic bias on what one would consider attractive if they were over-exposed to certain stimuli. As there is an increase in camera filters for facial and body images on social media platforms like Instagram, it is easy to alter a face or body to have larger features, therefore unconsciously providing consumers to have an increased aesthetic appeal towards unattainable and unrealistic natural beauty standards.
Varman (2021) found that there was indeed a desire to pursue cosmetic procedures after using filters. This shows how social media heavily influences an individual’s perception of beauty and how standards of beauty are changing due to filters being created to enhance features.
Chayangsu et. Al. (2020) found that all soft tissue fillers can cause complications. Consumers of cosmetic fillers must be warned of inexperienced and unlicensed practitioners. Consumers should continually be informed on the possible dangers of fillers injected by inexperienced injectors.
- An overview of any limitations in the paper
Goldie et al. (2021) studied 48 female participants. This poses as a limitation because the study only focuses on the women’s perception of beauty, and no men were used. This study was explained though that participants of the same sex were better able to determine any slight change when given the 12 standardized portraits to compare with, and only women portraits were used.
Chayangsu et. Al. (2020) studied patients in one hospital in a span of ten years in Asia. This data may not reflect the same in Canada or North America, which is a limitation in this study.

- Challenge posed by the issue
As more people consume social media, they are likely to be influenced on the certain beauty standards being portrayed online. This causes people to get cosmetic procedures like filler which have a risk of having adverse effects.
- How the issue impacts nurses
This issue impacts nurses because they have to be knowledgeable in doing the proper assessment and asking the proper questions when trying to reverse the complications of filler. It is especially dangerous if the patient does not know what was injected into them, and there is no way the nurse is able to determine possible antidotes which may help solve the problem.
- How the issue impacts patients
In patients who constantly consume social media, it can change their own perception of beauty. If a patient decides to pursue cosmetic treatments and try to save money, they may end up getting counterfeit product or even an unlicensed provider. When patients have adverse effects to treatment, go untreated or caught at a late stage after getting filler, it can lead patients have permanent disfigurements or even blindness when injected incorrectly or when using counterfeit product.

People who use instagram filters may be influenced to think that the filters version of themselves are more attractive since it is a stimuli that is constantly portrayed on social media. However, one should be weary if deciding to pursue cosmetic treatment to enhance their features. All soft tissue fillers can lead to complications. (Chayangsu, 2020; Goldie, 2021)
