DAC Sociology Racial Profiling and Discrimination Essay
The assignments in this course have built on one another to take you through the process of
designing, administering, and analyzing a social science survey. While we were limited on time,
and therefore scope, you have still built your knowledge toolkit so that you could conduct
rigorous survey research on your own.
For this final paper assignment, you will build on the previous two assignments by analyzing the
survey you administered and write them up in a formal research paper.
First, it is important that you sent out the link to your survey and received at least 10 responses.
Please see my class announcements for ways to connect with your classmates if you need
additional people to fill out your survey.
Your research paper should be comprehensive. You will discuss your research topic, include a
brief literature review, analyze your preliminary survey results, and discuss your findings. The
paper should be about 7-9 pages, in paragraph form (following APA formatting, 12-point font,
double spaced, 1” margins). Please submit a paper, not an outline. You should use full sentences
and paragraphs that flow together. However, I have provided the outline below to guide you
through the components you should include.
I. Introduction (~ 1 page)
1. Describe the social problem you propose to study and explain why it is important to

theory and research. It is important that these are social science journal articles. If you
are unsure, please check with me.
3. A literature review is not a summary of each article listed one after another. Instead,
you will need to synthesize the information you read in your sources, so you can apply it
to your particular research question. One way to do this is to use sub-headings (by
topics, theories, etc.) that can help you organize your thoughts and help your reader
follow along. In other words, identify key themes — especially shared themes across
articles — and write about them in a way that relates the themes together.
4. Think about the findings of these articles and what methods they used. How do they
help inform your project and how are they different?
5. Conclude this section by summarizing what is already understood about your research
question and what your study will add to the existing knowledge.

III. Research Methods (~ 2-3 pages)
