Description
For this second essay, I want you to compare and contrast the theme of punishment in the two short stories in Module 5, Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “Cell One.”
In a 3-5 page essay in MLA 8 style with direct citation from each story with parenthetical attribution (i.e.(Adichie), discuss how and why Tessie and Nnamabia are punished. What was their crime and does their punishment fit it? What do the two stories reveal about the role of punishment in society and its impact on the punished and those around them?
Make sure to use these questions only as a guideline. The essay should be fully fleshed out and have several citations from each story to support your ideas.
This essay is due Tuesday, February 16 by 11:59 PM.
In order to pass this assignment, you must submit an essay that has:
1. At least 3 FULL pages of essay text in MLA 8 style with proper headings, page numbers and a unique title;
2. Direct quotes from both stories that illustrate the theme of punishment with parenthetical citations. Don’t cite more than one line at a time. Try to pick very vivid phrases as evidence for your analysis.
3. A properly formatted works cited page with two entries – one for Adichie and one for Jackson – use the authors’ last name as the first part of the entry
4. A ONE-page Writing Reflection in which you discuss your writing process (don’t discuss your analysis of the story – focus on how you wrote the essay) and what grade you deserve based on the skills you have presented in the essay (remember I don’t grade for effort – I grade only for how the effort translates into writing and critical thinking skills).
