Public health is meant to improve and advance the health of populations and communities occupied by these populations (Mason et al., 2016). Nurses play a huge role in public health as they can help promote health. The lack of investment in the public has made it difficult for nurses to help promote public health. The best way the government has established to help drive investments into public health is by accreditation (Mason et al., 2016). Accreditation can be done by nurses showing improvement in public health and meeting standards.
To do that, the obstacles or negative impacts that we currently face in public health and address them as healthcare professionals. For example, health care professionals can help create health education programs to assess the communities and advocate for change through policies. Creating health education programs can help provide information about broad but prevalent public health issues—for example, diabetes, obesity, mental health, infection prevention, and food safety. During my clinical as a nursing student in Camillus House, located in Miami, I conducted a health education class on brushing teeth properly. I educated the population on how many diseases can be prevented by doing so.
It’s a common and effective way of helping improve public health. Before creating these health education programs, I believe the population and community they reside in should be further assessed. It’s essential to know the most significant health issues within a community to intervene. This will help professionals further plan for the community. However, policies must also be implemented to help provide change. Nurses hold great power over advocating through policies and raising awareness for public health issues.
Nurses can use public health policies to address multiple issues. Obesity can be addressed through health policies in the school setting for kids that prevent the consumption of fattening foods and increase the healthy food available (Mason et al., 2016). Policy intervention can also be used to provide equal pay, safe housing, and decrease discrimination within a community (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020). Health care professionals can help voice these policies and practice these policies to help promote change. This can even be done through social media posts and engagements.
Policies have the most significant influence on economically and socially disadvantaged populations. Health care professionals can also help by doing further research on public health issues and using the data to advocate for change in a community or population. If they can do this with a group of health care professionals, it has been proven that the impact on the community is much more significant. As a nurse myself, I plan to help advocate for populations and communities now and once I become an NP. I believe as a nurse I can help through education programs and community assessments in Miami, Florida. Helping the community will help better health care and make the environment safe.
In order to help public health, improve all health care professionals must come together as a whole, research, and intervene in any way possible. We must all show communities how to practice healthy behaviors (Mason et al., 2016).
